Hydrographic Surveying: Mapping the Underwater World

Understanding Hydrographic Surveying

Hydrographic surveying is the science of measurement and description of features which affect maritime navigation, marine construction, dredging, offshore oil exploration/drilling and related activities. Strong emphasis is placed on soundings, shorelines, tides, currents, seabed and submerged obstructions that relate to the previously mentioned activities.

Advanced Underwater Mapping

  • Single Beam Echo Sounders (SBES): Traditional depth measurement using a single acoustic pulse.
  • Multibeam Echo Sounders (MBES): Mapping a wide swath of the seafloor in high resolution, providing 100% coverage.
  • Side Scan Sonar: Providing detailed imagery of the seafloor to identify wrecks, pipelines, or geological features.

Accurate hydrographic data is critical for safe navigation and the successful execution of marine engineering projects.
